So what's this One Bad Man community all about, anyway?
We're here for one simple reason: To share our love of HP fandom's two baddest men, Snape and Malfoy. (Yes, we know. Technically that's two bad men, but we started out with just Severus. Then Lucius insisted on being included and who are we to deny him?)
This comm aims to spread the Snape and Lucius love far and wide. In the process, we hope to introduce our fandom friends to as many aspects of these two characters as possible.
Our aim isn’t about volume of fanworks. It’s about helping community members to find the best fanwork. That’s why we like to feature as many reccers and creators as we can. If you really like something then chances are you won’t be the only one. If you don’t like what’s posted one day, then just wait to see if you like what’s posted the next. It should all even out eventually.
What's allowed at OBM?
ANYTHING Severus Snape- or Lucius Malfoy-centric. That means all types of fanworks (fic, art, vids, meta, etc.) that you enjoy. We like to mix it up, so any and all pairings are welcome. Slash, het and gen fanworks featuring our bad men are all invited to the party.
Because we’re all for diversity of medium and pairing, we acknowledge that everyone has different tastes and we don’t expect everyone to like everything that’s posted. Some people like crackfic! It sets other people’s teeth on edge. Nor do we expect everything that’s posted/recced to be perfect. Because OBM members have exquisite taste, we of course prefer fic to be beta’d before posting.
I see you do a weekly sign-up post. Why do I need to sign up?
Well, you don't have to; I mean, we're all friends here so jumping the queue is totally allowed. But signing up just makes life easier for the mods because if you sign up we know a particular day is covered. The goal is to have at least one bad man every day of the week, and the sign-up post helps us ensure everyone gets their fix.
I've signed up for a certain day. Now what?
Now you post. You can post a new fanwork that you've created for the comm, or you can rec a fanwork so we can all shower the creator with love! You can even rec your own fanworks.
We especially love to have brand spanking new work posted here. If you are kind enough to create something especially for us, we just ask that you give OBM one week of exclusivity before you post it elsewhere.
Can I (re-)post an old fanwork of mine?
We’d prefer a self-rec pointing us to something you’re really proud of having created. There are already many archives for posting your creations. Most of them use specialised software that allows others to search for specific pairings, genres, ratings and kinks. We simply can’t compete with that using LJ.
But if you make a self-rec, OBM watchers who have time and enjoy the work you recced will check out your other work for themselves, and those who have only an hour or two to spare will go straight to your best work.
I want to rec a certain fanwork, but it’s already been recced here once. Does that mean I can’t rec it again?
We’ve run up against this situation a few times, so here’s the rule we came up with: If you want to rec a certain fanwork, and it was recced at OBM more than two years ago, then you can rec it again.
What is this 'scheduled entries' thing you keep banging on about?
Scheduled entries rock, and here's why: You can draft a post whenever you have a moment, and LJ will post it for you at a later date and time. This means that if you sign up for Thursday, you can draft the entry on Sunday and tell LJ to post it on Thursday.
LJ’s instructions for making a scheduled post are available here. In short, to schedule an entry for a future date, just click the "Post to Journal" link and write up your post like you normally would. Then just make sure to click on the date box and specify the date and time when you would like the entry to be posted in the future.
How do I tag my post?
Because we're limited to only 1000 tags, we need to keep it minimal. Please see the guidelines.
